TROLLING ON LAKES IN FINLAND

There are excellent circumstances for trolling in Finland. It is easy to go trolling on the big lakes in Central Finland because the permit systems are excellent. There are enough waters and fish.

You need a boat to troll. it is also possible troll with a rowing boat but a motor is preferred on big lakes. Several rods, usually 2-5 per boat, are often used when trolling but it is also possible to use close to 20 rods at the same time. The lures are set to swim in the same depth where fish are likely to swim. If the depth is not known, lures are set to swim in different depths with extra weights, downrigger or divers. About 10-30 metres of line should be used, so that it is possible to turn without problems. You need rod holders if you use multiple rods. If you use only few rods, you can hold them in your hands. The trolling route is chosen depending on the trolling method. If trolling is done on the surface, it does not matter what the route is. Generally you should stay close to probable lodges. Ends of capes, ranges of rocks, shallows and sounds are excellent lodges.

There is an excellent network of places where you can launch your boat and places to take a break in Central Finland.

Pike Trolling on lakes in Finland

Trolling is an excellent way to fish pike.

It is enough to have one rod and a lure when trolling along rushes. You should troll near sides of rushes by rowing or with a motor, so you can fish a big area effectively. This method is often quite effective and fun. Use weighed lures lures or lures with divers if you want to catch big pike from deep waters. Sounds and abrupt banks are excellent places.

Pike fishing season begins after spawning in spring. Immediately after the spawning pike bite agressively. Big pikes are in deep water in summer when water is warm. There are plenty of small pike weighing under 2 kg in shallow water. Big pike come back into shallow water in spring.

You should troll pike near the bottom. Sides of rushes and ranges of rocks are excellent trolling places.

The best times to catch pike are early in the mornings and in the evening at sunset, but it is also possible during the day.

Big spoons and wobblers are excellent lures for pike fishing. You should always use a cast when fishing pike.

Freshwater salmon Trolling on lakes in Finland

Freshwater salmon use vendace and smelt as nutriment and therefore they follow vendace and smelt swarms. Freshwater salmon are often in deep waters in summer and therefore you should use a downrigger when trolling. Freshwater salmon are near the surface, often even near shores, in autumn and spring.

The best time for trolling is in the darkness of the morning and evening, but it is also possible to catch freshwater salmon at night or during the day. The fishing season begins early in spring and ends when lakes freeze. The best season is late in autumn.

Brown trout use vendace and smelt as nutriment and you should take that into consideration when you choose your lure.

Pike perch Trolling on lakes in Finland

You can catch pike perch near the surface in midsummer, but often you should float your lures in deep water.

Pike perch is active in darkness and the best time to cach it is in the evenings and mornings. June and August are the best months to troll pike perch.

Colourful 10 - 20 cm wobblers are excellent for pike perch.
