Light fly fishing tackles are enough on rapids. Wadding boots are enough on small rapids and on big rapids you need wadding trousers and even a boat.
Dry fly fishing is popular on rapids. A fish which has been seen should be approached from below and the cast is directed above the fish so that the fly floats over the fish. If no fish can be seen, the fly must be floated over the probable lodges.
Wet fly fishing is effective with sedge fly pupas on rapids in Central Finland. It is important to sink the pupa as near the bottom as possible. The biggest brown trout and rainbow trout are often caught with streamers. The fry imitation is usually dragged on the surface or floated near the bottom.

Grayling is one of the most wanted catches for fly fishermen. It is possible to catch big grayling, weighing even over 1 kg, on rapids in Central Finland. The best way to catch grayling is fly-fishing.
Grayling are often beside currents and deep water areas in rapids. Grayling stay always near the bottom but they rise often.
Grayling stays in areas above waterfalls and in slow-flowing quiet water areas in late winter. Fly-fishing season begins in spring when there are a plenty of pupas in rapids. This is an excellent season to fish grayling. This short season is usually in March but the time varies depending on weather.
The grayling fishing season begins after spawning in the early summer and the best season is in August and in the beginning of September. In spring and autumn the best time to catch grayling is during the day and in the midsummer in the darkness.
Grayling is fished with wet and dry flies.
Rainbow trout bites a fly very aggressively.
Areas above rapids, above and below stones, under fallen trees, backflows and quiet water areas below waterfalls are excellent rainbow trout lodges.
The Best time to catch rainbow trout in summer are the darkest hours in the night. It is possible to catch rainbow trout also during the day in autumn and spring.
Wet flies and dry flies imitating Brown trout baits, as well as fry imitations, are excellent for Brown trout fishing. Irritating flies which are divergently-coloured and moving are excellent for rainbow trout.
Powan populations are one of the strongest in Central Finland. It is also possible to catch powan in running waters with fly-fishing tackles.
Powan trout are shy and therefore you should approach the fishing ground ver carefully. The jaws of a powan are extremely smooth and therefore you should play a powan carefully.
Powan is sometimes caught On rapids in Central Finland. Powan are usually in slow flowing parts of rapid. Powan rise a lot and therefore it is easy to find them.
The best time to catch powan is at sunset and sometimes also in the mornings.
Powan is fished with small wet and dry flies.
Fly fishing is the most popular fishing method on rapids in central Finland. Brown trout is flyfishermens' most wanted catch.
Brown trout are shy and therefore you should approach the fishing ground ver carefully.

You must always pay National fisheries management fee 2024 if you are aged 18-64 years. National fisheries management fee entitles you to fish in the fishing waters within a whole Finland (not in Aland). Fishing Permit entitles you to fish using single rod, reel and lure. You may also use a weighted lure or diver. This fishing Permit entitles you to fish everywhere but not at protection areas (often special fishing grounds and salmon and whitefish abundant rapids and currents). You can often purhace other permit to those areas. Fee is 45 EUR for the calendar year 2024 or 15 EUR for seven days or 6 EUR for one days and and you can get it online here.
